OK so this is where the East Coast really starts to come alive.
The town itself has a thrown together alternative feel, you can cruise up and down the streets for hours being carried by the energy of the people and the place. The beaches are gorgeous and the good news for surfers is that they have one which faces every direction, so there?s usually something good on. Byron is the most Easterly point of Australia and has a spectacular light house walk (just don?t leave you car in the carpark!!). The town also has a mixture of nightlife with something for everybody, just tell your hostel what kind of a night out you want and they?ll be able to advise.
From Byron you can take a bus tour to Nimbin. Nimbin is famous for being the alternative centre of Australia?this translates to most people as somewhere you can pick up dope even if you have ?I?m a policeman? tattooed on your forehead. The honest truth about the place is that the tourist pot trade funds a darker hard drug scene locally. Nimbin is only one street big, you?ll have seen everything and been asked if you want ?smoko? a hundred times after 5 minutes!
There are so many good hostels in Bryon that I?m loathed to recommend just one. I stayed in Aquarius and although it is a party hostel you can get away from it when you want to. The rooms were great, being both large and clean. The hostel bar is huge and welcoming. Having spoken to other travellers I?d also recommend Nomads in Bryon too. For couples looking to stay in Byron I would recommend Middle Reef Beachouse, this place has three self contained units which are good for more private getaways.
Stay ? Pick a hostel any hostel!
Do ? Surf, walk to the lighthouse, go to Nimbin, go crazy at night!
